Royal Caribbean announced that Symphony of the Seas will have a Godfamily, not a Godmother, by choosing Carlos and Alexa PenaVega, together with their 17-month-old son, Ocean.
A family will serve as Godfamily of a cruise ship for the first time. The selection of a guiding spirit of a new ship, customarily a godmother, derives from a longstanding maritime tradition. This role is often held by celebrities and royalty.
According to Royal Caribbean, they picked the family because they had celebrated a number of family firsts on line’s Oasis Class ships, and personified the spirit of the new vessel, redefining the way families stay.
The nearly 25-year relationship between Royal Caribbean and Carlos started on his first cruise when the boy was just a 4-year-old, to be beat by son Ocean, who took a cruise for the first time at 13 months.
The family will formally name Symphony when she arrives to her home port of Miami in November.
