Marella Discovery 2 has been disabled after engine failure, while sailing in Guidecca Canal, Venice historic center, close to Doge’s Palace and Basilica of San Marco, on Monday, May 14.
In about half an hour 3 tugs took the cruise ship under control and it was berthed at the passenger terminal. At the time of accident, in the afternoon, Marella Discovery 2 was leaving port of Venice, bound for Split.
This latest accident boosted protests against big ship navigation in Venice downtown. No Large Ships Committee is to gather for an emergency meeting early June, in an attempt to once again impose ban on all large vessels navigating in the city's historic area.
