Saga Cruises laid the keel for line’s first new cruise ship, Spirit of Discovery, on Thursday, June 28.
The official ceremony was held at Meyer Werft’s shipyard in Papenburg and marked the official start of construction for the 999-passenger ship, the first of 2 cruise ships being built for Saga.
As part of old maritime tradition, a commemorative coin with the name of the ship, keel-laying date and the lettering S714 (the identification marker for the vessel during her build) was placed under the first block in the drydock where 54 blocks will be used to form the 58,250 GT Spirit of Discovery.
Spirit of Discovery is due to be delivered in Bremerhaven on June 20, 2019. The cruiser has been specifically designed via feedback from past, present and future passengers. All staterooms will feature a balcony, with 107 of them being single cabins.
