Popular cruise destination located off the coast of Roatan, Little French Key, has been destroyed by a fire that ripped through the resort on August 26, causing more than US$3 million in damages.
Because this animal sanctuary, which has long helped rehabilitate animals abused in zoos and circuses, had been under attack by what Moshe Lahijani, its owner, called “an engineered bombardment of false, negative [stories] against this little corner of paradise,” it's believed the fire was likely arson.
A majority of the animals were rescued, with the exception of two parrots and a rabbit. As a result, there is a process of creating makeshift, and temporary shelters to house the animals until a more permanent solution is arranged.
Long among the most popular shore trips among cruisers who head to Roatan, the sanctuary of Little French Key, which also boasts beautiful beaches and is adjacent to the world's second largest coral reef, is situated 10 min from Mahogany Bay cruise port and 35 min from Coxen Hole cruise port.
