A massive waterspout hit Port Bastia (Corsica Island, France), turning into a tornado Monday morning, July 15, as authorities issued a safety warning for the island. Footage showed the massive vortex over the Mediterranean, just outside the seaport and close to a cruise ship.
Meteo-France issued safety warning that advised caution as "dangerous phenomena" were expected, including heavy rain, flooding, and thunderstorms.
A statement from Meteo-France read that in Bastia, extremely intense rain was observed, reaching 30 mm (1.2 inches) in 6 minutes, 80 mm (3.1 inches) in 30 minutes and 120 mm (4.7 inches) in an hour. Waterspouts degenerated into tornados.
