Two more cruise ships skipped scheduled visits to San Juan Puerto Rico, as demonstrators have been calling for the resignation of Gov. Ricardo Rossello.
The loss of tourism is impacting the economy of the island. According to tourism officials, the two cruise ships would have generated a US$1.3 million economic impact. Officials revealed they estimated the island had missed out on a combined US$760,000 from MSC Seaside and Celebrity Equinox on Monday, July 23.
Royal Caribbean canceled port calls to San Juan and said passenger and crew safety and well-being was the top priority. The protests are the result of hundreds of pages of Rossello's texts having been leaked.
The demonstration in San Juan Monday night turned violent after protesters fired fireworks, bottles and rocks at police and officers fired back with tear gas. Rossello refuses to resign but said he doesn't plan to run for re-election.
