Even as the situation in Puerto Rico is dying down, another major cruise company canceled a port call in San Juan. On Thursday, July 25, travel agents received a letter from Disney Cruise Line with “update regarding a modification” to Disney Fantasy’s July 27 itinerary.
The letter read that Disney Fantasy was scheduled to visit San Juan (Puerto Rico) on Sunday, August 4, but as "San Juan has been experiencing unrest and protests throughout the city" they had decided to cancel a visit to San Juan. Instead, the journey will now call at St Thomas USVI.
This is the only change made to the 11-night itinerary, that also features visits to Aruba, Barbados, Martinique, St Kitts and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.
The cancellation comes even as the situation in the port city seems to be cooling down due to the resignation of embattled Governor Ricardo Rossello. Massive protests rocked San Juan as citizens demanded his resignation after the release of messages exchanged by the governor and members of the administration containing misogynistic and homophobic remarks, along with jokes about the victims of Hurricane Maria.
The past weeks have seen a number of cruise lines canceling scheduled stops in San Juan. According to the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, the island has lost US$2.5 million or more in revenue.
