Local authorities in Cameroon on Monday, August 27, reported that 3 people had died after a passenger ferry of Cameroon’s shipping company Achouka sank off Bakassi Peninsula (country's Atlantic coast).
According to a Cameroon navy official (who has preferred not to be named) 200+ passengers had been on the ship that had left Nigeria en-route to Tiko wharf (southwestern Cameroon). The navy had rescued 100+ people from the ferry and 90+ others are still missing, while search-and-rescue efforts had continued.
The accident had been blamed on overloading, but Achouka officials insist it had been caused by "bad weather or it sank after striking a rock".
