While passing through the Panama Canal new locks on Friday, September 20, Carnival Fantasy suffered damages after hitting the lock's wall.
Carnival Cruise Line said in a statement that during Fantasy ship’s passage, the vessel contacted with one of the locks while the water levels had been lowered. The liner was not under its own power and at the time of the collision was assisted by a Panama Canal locomotive as it moved through the locks.
No injuries were reported. Initial assessments indicated damage was limited to "broken glass and handrails aft on decks 9 (Serenity complex / adults-only) and 10 (Lido Restaurant's terrace). The ship was expected to arrive in Puerto Limon, as scheduled.
Carnival Fantasy left Mobile Alabama on Monday, September 16, on a 10-day voyage. Before returning to Mobile, it was scheduled to visit Costa Rica, Honduras and Mexico. The next stop was Isla Roatan, approx 40 mi off the coast of Honduras. Fantasy typically spends the year on 4- and 5-day Western Caribbean voyages.
