A crew member aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship is dead after going overboard. The accident on September 22 involves a 35-year-old India native, Mansley Pereira.
Pereira went overboard when Rhapsody of the Seas was in Port Dubrovnik Croatia. The man was working as a waiter on the ship. According to the shipowner RCCL, he had "committed suicide by jumping into the sea.” A local newspaper in India said that family disputes could have driven the man to suicide. However, there were had been no witnesses, CCTV footage, or videos of him jumping intentionally overboard. A video posted on Twitter showed people trying to rescue Pereira from the water as well as a few giving him chest compressions after pulling the man into a rescue boat.
Rhapsody OTS departed Port Venice on September 21 for a 7-day roundtrip. It arrived in Santorini and will return to Venice on Saturday, September 28.
At the time of the accident, the 2416-passenger liner was on a 7-day roundtrip from Venice to Greece and Croatia.
