A woman has died after falling from Hurtigruten's MS Finnmarken in Norway. The ship prepared to dock in the town of Alesund when the passenger fell overboard.
The unnamed woman, reportedly Norwegian in her 40s, fell from the cruise ship at around 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, October 30. A rescue operation including 6 vessels, a helicopter, and specialist divers were rushed to the accident scene but stormy weather and failing light made the search hard.
The woman was rushed to the hospital in an “extremely serious” condition. Her injuries were severe and she was then flown to St. Olav's Hospital in Trondheim, around 150 miles away. However, she died Thursday afternoon.
Police reports stated there was “no reason to believe” there was foul play involved in the death. Police did hold the cruise ship while they conducted an investigation. MS Finnmarken has since been released and continued on her 6-day cruise from Bergen to Kirkenes.
The woman’s fall took place relatively close to the dock in Alesund.
