The Mad Decent Boat Party on Norwegian Pearl returned to port Miami after a cruise ship passenger jumped overboard. The woman allegedly jumped after what is reported to be a twerk-off gone wrong. The dance cruise, founded by Diplo, was supposed to go from Miami to Cozumel, but they have decided to cancel the voyage in light of the tragedy.
TMZ broke the story that the woman, Kaylyn Sommer, was still missing as of this morning, despite a Coast Guard search.
“All DJ sets on the ship were postponed immediately after the incident. Major Lazer and Dillon Francis — who were supposed to perform beachside — are expected to play onboard during the return trip to Miami.”
Mashable is reporting that the search for Sommer is being conducted off of the Yucatan Channel. The missing woman was involved in a “twerk-off” before jumping off the ship. Graham Hansen, who knows Sommer, spoke to her companion who was also on board the ship.
“She and some other girl who was calling herself the twerk queen were having a twerk-off, ” Hansen said “Twerk queen started twerking on her (the missing woman’s) boyfriend, and it caused some sort of issue between the two of them.”
Sommer is thought to have jumped off the deck of the ship after the dance off, while they were approximately 22 miles off the coast of Cuba. People aboard the ship started madly tweeting, some making insensitive jokes.
According to NBC Miami, the U.S. Coast Guard is continuing to investigate what led up to Sommer jumping off the ship. The cruise ship company released a statement in reference to the investigation.
“On Thursday, Nov. 12, during a chartered cruise on Norwegian Pearl, a female guest was observed intentionally going overboard while the ship was sailing the Yucatan Channel. The ship’s crew immediately initiated rescue measures, including deploying three rescue boats and notifying the Coast Guard and other relevant authorities. The search for the guest is ongoing. Both the ship and charter company teams are providing support to the family and all impacted guests during this difficult time.”
It is thought that Sommer, who has a young daughter, got married last year on the same cruise.
The Daily Mail said that additional details are not being revealed, but the volume of the electronic dance music (EDM) combined with the incredibly dark sea hampered the rescue efforts. It is thought that it would have been about a 100 foot drop into the sea.
According to NCL's emailed statement:
“... the female passenger was seen intentionally going overboard during a chartered cruise on the Pearl. Officials say a Coast Guard cutter and a C-130 plane were responding to assist in the search. The cruise line says crew members also immediately initiated rescue measures, including deploying three rescue boats and notifying authorities.”
