According to the recent Greek Ports Association's General Assembly (held in late-January 2021), Port Heraklion (Crete Greece) reached in 2020 rank #1 among all ports in the country in terms of cruise passenger volume.
During the pandemic in 2020, Heraklion welcomed a total of 19998 cruisers with 24 ship calls, or ~30% of all cruise tourists that visited Greece in 2020.
Seaport’s 2020 passenger volume is not representative of the potential of Heraklion as a call port, lacking ~287000 cruisers compared with 2019 guest volume. However, it proves that during the COVID crisis Heraklion retained a significant share of passengers compared with other ports.
Heraklion is one of the major cruise destinations in Greece and played in autumn last year a crucial role in the resumption of cruises in the Mediterranean, both as home and as a transit port, a fact that has been acknowledged by the cruise community.
