On Thursday, March 11, Dutch polar travel company Oceanwide Expeditions celebrated the ship launch of its newest Polar Class 6 ship, MV Janssonius, from Brodosplit Shipyards in Split Croatia.
Similar to the line's last vessel, MV Hondius, the newbuild Janssonius represents one of the world's most technologically advanced ice-classed passenger ships.
Janssonius is specially designed for polar travel, maximizing speed and safety while minimizing environmental impact. The vessel is using LED lighting, steam heat, bio-degradable paints and lubricants, and is also equipped with flexible power management systems keeping fuel consumption and CO2 levels low.
Due in part to the recent investment from Bolster Investment Partners, Oceanwide Expeditions continues to plan itineraries and build ships that boast the latest advancements in expedition travel.
MV Janssonius was named after the 17th-century Dutch cartographer Jan Janssonius, son-in-law of Flemish cartographer Jodocus Hondius. The newbuild will be completed and ready to commence her first Antarctic season in November.
