The Canadian passenger shipping company BC Ferries released footage of the 3rd ship in its new hybrid-electric fleet arriving in Victoria BC on July 22.
The boat departed Damen Shipyards (Galati Romania) on May 19 to complete a 64-day Transatlantic crossing (~10700 nautical miles) to Victoria BC (Vancouver Island, Canada).
MS Island 3 is one of all 6 Island-Class units equipped with batteries for fully electric operations in the future. The vessels are fitted with hybrid propulsion systems in order to bridge the gap until funding and shore charging infrastructure becomes available in British Columbia. The design of the new ships lowers emissions, reduces underwater radiated noise, and improves customer service, BC Ferries revealed.
The ships Island 3 and Island 4 will serve the Campbell River-Quadra Island route starting in 2022.
