1000+ Americans were stuck on a HAL-Holland America cruise ship with a COVID outbreak after Mexico banned the tourists from disembarking.
HAL's liner ms Koningsdam left homeport San Diego (California USA) on Sunday, December 19, bound for Mexico. However, Mexico's Jalisco State barred anyone onboard from leaving the boat because a number of people tested COVID-positive.
Ports of call on the 7-day roundtrip "Mexican Riviera Holiday Cruise" (Christmas-themed voyage) included Cabo San Lucas (Dec 21), Mazatlan (Dec 22) and Puerto Vallarta (Dec 23).
According to a HAL spokesman, the cases had come in 21 fully vaccinated crew. All were showing mild/no symptoms and were in isolation. Close contacts had been "quarantined out of an abundance of caution."
MS Koningsdam is heading back to San Diego CA and is scheduled to return on Sunday, December 26.
