Abu Simbel is a Lake Nasser cruise port and a complex of two in-rock temples located in Nubia (Upper Egypt), near the Egypt-Sudan border. The temples are on Lake Nasser's western bank, approx 300 km (190 ml)) by road southwest of Aswan.
Abu Simbel temples (aka Nubian Monuments) are designated UNESCO site, running from Abu Simbel downriver to Philae (Aswan). The temples (originally carved out of the rock in 13th-century BC) served as a mausoleum to King Ramesses II and his Queen Nefertari. They also commemorated king's victory at Battle of Qadesh (1274 BC).
In 1968, the entire Abu Simbel temple complex was relocated on a man-made hill located above Aswan High Dam. Their relocation was necessary as they would have been submerged in Lake Nasser - an artificial water reservoir on Nile River, which formed in 1970 after the inauguration of Aswan High Dam.
