Akaroa Harbour is located in NZ's Canterbury Region, part of Banks Peninsula. Onawe Peninsula is at the harbor's head. The Akaroa harbor is actually the crater of an extinct volcano. Cruise vessels enter Akaroa harbor to anchor there, while passengers are transported to the wharf via tenders.

The small town (population under 1000) is New Zealand's oldest European settlement. In 2013 was established the Akaroa Marine Reserve. Following the February 2011's earthquake (Richter magnitude 6,3) in Lyttelton (seaport for Christchurch), Akaroa became a substitute port for cruise ships.

Akaroa NZ's cruising season runs October through April. During season 2016-2017, the cruise port had scheduled 77 ship calls. To cope with the increasing influx of cruise tourists, in 2016 was upgraded the town's water supply and were added mobile public toilets. Akaroa Civic Trust had suggested charging cruise tourists AUD 5 levy per person to help pay for the needed infrastructure.

Among the most booked shore excursions are the bus tours from Akaroa to Christchurch.

Akaroa cruise terminal

Akaroa is a tender cruise port, which means cruise ships anchor in the harbor and their passengers are transported via the ship's tender boats.
