Port Akdeniz is Antalya's cruise port located on Anatolia Peninsula's southwestern coast. Antalya is Turkey's 5th-largest city (population around 1,2 million, metro around 2,22 million). The city is referred to as the country's "capital of tourism" being Turkey's biggest sea resort on the Turkish Riviera (Eastern Mediterranean Sea). In 2019, Antalya received a record of ~13,6 million international tourists.
In late-October 2020, Global Ports Holding (GPH) announced an agreement to sell for USD 140 million (~EUR 118 M) Port Akdeniz to QTerminals (Qatar-based commercial port operator). GPH's Port Akdeniz-Antalya concession agreement runs through August 2028. The port specializes in cargo shipping operations (dry-liquid-bulk-general cargoes), containerized cargo (boxships) and passenger shipping (cruise).
Covering total area ~0,2 km2, Akdeniz-Antalya Port's main facilities and annual capacities are:
- Quay Pier length 1117 m (3665 ft)
- 350,000 TEU-containers
- 600,000 passengers
- open-air storage area 80,000 m2
- closed storage space / warehouses 1260 m2
- CFS field 50,000 m2
- 6 mobile gantry cranes, 9 excavators, 7 stackers, 33 forklifts
Cruise passengers usually need a taxi to get to Kaleici ("within the castle") quarter, a small but central old town of Antalya, which is a mostly modern city. The old harbour has been redeveloped but from here you can climb to Kalepapisi (castle gate) of the old town overlooked by Yivli Minare (Fluted Minaret) and where the Selcuk tower is built into the walls of the city. Other highlights include Kesik Minare (Broken Minaret), triple-arched Hadraian's Gate and Hidirlik Kulesi (round Roman tower) in the corner of Mermerli and Karaalioglu parks. The Archaeological Museum is also not to be missed - it houses one of the top five collections in Turkey.
Once prized by pirates for its superb location on Turkey's southern coast, the sheltered harbour of Antalya is naturally tucked into the cliff-face and protected by almost entire Byzantine castellated walls.
Established by King Attalus II of Pergamon during the 2nd century BC, it was out of Antalya that St. Paul and Barnabus set sail on their 1st mission in the first century AD. Crusaders used the port city as a transit point to Holy Land. Antalya was occupied by the Turks during the 12th century, followed by Byzantines, Ottomans, Italians.
Antalya cruise terminal
Antalya cruise port (Akdeniz) offers 3 docking piers with lengths, respectively 200 m (656 ft), 170 m (558 ft) and 140 m (460 ft). Water depth at these piers is 9 m (30 ft).
The docking area is at approx 15 km (9 ml) to the east of the city's historic center. Bus shuttles to there are free (provided by the cruise company). At the port, there is also a taxi rank (rate is around EUR 25 / one-way to the city).

City Tours and Shore Excursions
The city of Antalya also features a good shingle beach, a beautiful promenade lined with cafes and palm trees, a tram service circling the old city and running along the seafront. Further afield you can see sandy beaches and waterfalls at Kursunlu and Duden. From here you can visit the ancient Roman and Greek cities of Aspendos, Phaselis, and Perge.
