Arkhangelsk (Arctic Russia)

Arkhangelsk (aka Archangelsk or Archangel) is an Arctic port city and the administrative center of Russia's Arkhangelsk Oblast. The city is located in the northern part of European Russia, covers a total area of approx 294 km2 (114 mi2) and has a population of around 350,000.

The city is on both banks of Northern Dvina River (close to its exit into the White Sea) and spreads over 40 km (25 mi) along the river's banks. Until 1703, it was Russia's main seaport. An 1133-km (704-mi) long railway links to Moscow, starting from Arkhangelsk and passing through Vologda and Yaroslavl. The city is also served by two airports - Talagi, and Vaskovo.

In 2008 was officially announced that the destroyed during USSR times Arkhangelsk Cathedral (dedicated to Archangel Michael) will be rebuilt. The foundation stone was laid in November 2008. The cathedral is close to the riverport and city's main bus station. The building was completed in 2017. Another tourist attraction is the Arkhangelsk TV Mast (height 151 m / 495 ft) used for radio and TV broadcasting.

Port Arkhangelsk

Port Arkhangelsk is located approx 50 km (31 mi) from Dvina Bay (White Sea). The seaport connects the Arctic Russian North's coastal areas. For much of Russia's history, the port was the centre of the international maritime shipping trade.

During the USSR / Soviet period (1922-1991), Port Arkhangelsk was a major submarine and naval base of the Soviet Navy. Today, it is still a major naval base of the Russian Navy's Northern Fleet. Port Arkhangelsk exports and imports pulp, lumber, coal, metals, machinery, consumer and industrial goods, fish. It is also the main base of Northern Company, which performs the maritime transport of the Barents-Kara-White seas, the Northern Sea Route and overseas shipping lines. A regular passenger ferry line to Dikson (Yenisei Gulf, Kara Sea), Kandalaksha (Kandalaksha Gulf, White Sea), Mezen (Mezen Bay, White Sea), Murmansk (Kola Bay, Barents Sea), Novaya Zemlya Archipelago and Onega (Onega Bay, White Sea) operates out of Arkhangelsk.

This Russian cargo shipping port has Russia's only containership terminal in the Arctic, which includes an open space area (sized 0,1 km2 / 0,04 mi2). This allows the port to store 5762 TEU-containers at a time, of which up to 2200 TEUs with dangerous goods plus 200 reefers (refrigerated containers). Container terminal's open area is sized ~0,1 km2 (0,038 mi2). The terminal handles 75000+ TEUs per year.

Besides the container terminal, Port Arkhangelsk has 3 cargo terminals. Port's wharfage/quay line has total length approx 3,3 km (2 mi). Carco berths can handle vessels with max draft 9,2 m (30 ft) and LOA length 310 m (1017 ft). Port's total warehousing is ~0,29 km2 (0,11 mi2), which includes covered storage (40,000 m2) and open storage area (250,000 m2).

In Arkhangelsk are registered/homeported many of Russia's icebreakers.
