Avignon is a Rhone River cruise port located in Provence (south-eastern France). The city has a population of around 90,000. In the Avignon Papacy period (1309-1377), seven popes resided in Avignon. The city was bought in 1348 by Pope Clement VI from Joanna I of Naples. Its papal control persisted until 1791 when during the French Revolution it became part of France.

Among Avignon's historic landmarks are the Cathedral (Notre-Dame des Doms, located next to the Palais des Papes /now a museum), Pont d'Avignon, Synagogue, Lapidary Museum, Calvet Museum, churches, chapels.

On cruise shore excursions/roundtrip bus tours from Avignon are visited Pont du Gard (Roman aqueduct), Roussillon, Saint-Remy-de-Provence (famous for the Roman Glanum city's ruins and the Saint-Paul Asylum), as well as scenic vineyards.
