Bacharach is a Rhine River cruise port and town in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate state (Mainz-Bingen district), with population around 2,000. It is also located in Rhine Gorge, approx 48 km (30 mi) south of Koblenz. West Rhine Railway trains visit the town regularly on the route Koblenz-Mainz (via Boppard-Bacharach-Bingen).
Town's economy is based on tourism, including cruise ships. Boats operated by the German company KD Cruises (Koln-Dusseldorfer Deutsche Rheinschiffahrt) regularly visit Bacharach on Middle Rhine cruise itineraries between Koln (Cologne) and Dusseldorf.
Local tourist attractions include wood-frame houses, Altes Haus (built 1368), Haus Utsch (built 1585, old postal station and marketplace, Palatinate Amt (wine cellar), Palatinate mint, St Nicholas’s Church, St Peter’s Church, Wernerkapelle and town wall ruins, the castles Burg Stahleck and Burg Stahlberg, the annual festival Kulinarische Sommernacht (held in August, culinary-themed), Vierthalermarkt (mediaeval market).
