Baltra Island (Isla Baltra), is a small island of the Galapagos Islands. Also known as South Seymour (called after Lord Hugh Seymour), Baltra is a little flat island situated near the center of the Galapagos, created by geological uplift. The isle is very arid and vegetation consists of prickly pear cactus, palo santo trees, and salt bushes.

During WW2 (1939-1945) Baltra Island was established as a US Army Air Force base. Crews stationed at Baltra patrolled eastern Pacific for enemy submarines and provided protection for Panama Canal. After the war, the facilities were given to Ecuador's government. Today the isle continues as an official military base of Ecuador. The foundations of buildings and other remains of the United States base including the old airfield can still be seen.

Seymour Airport was the only airport serving the Galapagos until 1986. Currently, there are two airports receiving flights from the continent, the other one is located on San Cristobal Island. Baltra is the only airport with overnight facilities for planes.

Baltra Island cruise terminal

On arriving on Baltra Island, all visitors are transported by bus to one of the two docks. The first one is located in a small bay where boats cruising the Galapagos await passengers. The second one is a ferry dock that connects Baltra to Santa Cruz island via Itabaca Channel.

The following map of Galapagos Islands cruise itineraries shows the two main routes and all island stops (ports/landing sites) in the archipelago.
