Banjul (fka Bathurst) is a port city and the capital of Gambia (West Africa). The city covers a total area of approx 12 km2 (5 mi2) and has a population of around 35,000 (metro around 360,000).

Banjul is located on Banjul Island (aka St Mary's Island), where the Gambia River enters the Atlantic Ocean. The island is linked with the mainland to the west and the rest of the Greater Banjul Area through bridges.

Ferries connect Banjul to mainland Gambia at the other river's side. Regularly scheduled ferries operate on the ferry route Banjul-Barra (across Gambia River).

Banjul is Gambia's administrative and economic centre. The principal industry is peanut processing, but palm wood, palm oil, beeswax and skins, and hides are shipped from port Banjul.

Major tourist attractions include Gambian National Museum, African Heritage Museum, Albert Market, several major mosques, two cathedrals.
