Bejaia (fka Bougie/Bugia) is a Mediterranean port in Algeria's Kabylia region (North Africa) and the capital city of Bejaia Province, with population around 180,000. The surrounding scenery is marked by the Yemma Gouraya/aka Lalla Gouraya mountain to the north (with Pic des Singes/peak) and the Bejaia Gulf to the east-southeast (with Les Aiguades Beach /lined up with vacation homes, one of the country's most popular vacation travel destinations).
Port Bejaia (locode DZBJA) is the Western Mediterranean's principal oil port serving the export of crude petroleum from Sahara (delivered via the pipeline from Hassi Messaoud/Algeria's Ouargla Province). The seaport also serves exports of iron and phosphates, wines, agriculture products (mainly dried figs and dry plums).
The city is served by electric trains (Beni Mansour-Bejaia railway) and Abane Ramdane Airport (aka Soummam Airport and Bejaia Airport) located approx 5 km (3 mi) to the south of the city. Regularly scheduled domestic and international flights (by Air Algerie, Tassili Airlines, Transavia, Volotea, TUI fly Belgium) link to domestic destinations (Algiers, Hassi Messaoud) as well as to France (Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Lille) and Belgium (Charleroi).
Bejaia is the gateway to the Gouraya National Park (1984-established, 2004-UNESCO listed) with land area approx 21 km2 (8 mi2). Gouraya NP is heavily forested and includes 13 villages (total population around 2,000). The NP's main attraction are the Barbary apes (macaque monkeys).
