Belem (Para, Brazil) is located 100 km (60 mi) from the Para River entrance to Amazon Delta. Belem is Brazil's main lower Amazon River port. it has a total municipality area of 1,059.40 km2 (409.04 mi2) and a population of around 1,439,600 people.
Founded by the Portuguese in 1615, Belem was an important trading port since the opening of Amazon to foreign trade in the late 19th century. The city has numerous public squares and well-paved streets extending to the jungle's edge. It is also northern Brazil's cultural center. Among the attractions are Praca de Republica (afternoon concerts are free of charge), Teatro da Paz (built 1868), numerous museums and churches (Merces, Cathedral, Santo Alexandre, Nossa Senhora de Nazare).
The municipality of Belem contains 99% of Utinga State Park which was created in 1993 to protect the water supply of the metropolitan area. The park, situated just a few kilometers from the city center, provides space for healthy activities in contact with nature. There are 8 trails, all providing contact with a variety of species of flora and fauna.
Located less than 15 km (9.3 miles) from the center of Belem, in Tenone neighborhood, Bioparque Amazonia Safari-Crocodilo Safari Zoo is surrounded by rivers, streams, and forests. Summary of Amazon landscape with rich flora and fauna, the zoo features about 23 km (14 mi) of trails in an area of 4 interconnected ecosystems.
Inspired by Bois de Boulogne Park in Paris, Rodrigues Alves Wood is a piece of Amazonia preserved in the middle of Belem city. Comprising 16 ha, in Avenida Almirante Barroso, one of the busiest thoroughfares of the city, having 2,500 native species, orchidary, caverns, waterfalls, lakes, and even a mountain replica.
Belem city can be reached by Tocantins and Amazonas Rivers and by the Atlantic Ocean. It has been referenced in the opening episode of TV series No Ordinary Family.
