Beqa Island (Fiji) is a small isle located approx 10 km (6 mi) to the south of Viti Levu (Fiji's main island with Suva - country's capital). The island has land area 36 km2 (14 mi2), highest elevation 462 m (1516 ft), 4 resorts and 9 villages with a combined population of around 3,000.
On Beqa are located 4 resorts - Lawaki Beach House, Beqa Lagoon Resort, Kulu Bay Resort, and Lalati Resort. On Steward Island (off Beqa) is the Royal Davui Resort. The island is very popular among adventure divers for shark diving (scuba diving in a cage) at Beqa Lagoon.
Island's main tourist attraction is the firewalking tradition (walking barefoot over hot stones) practiced by the Sawau people. Island's economy is heavily based on tourism. Beqa Island has developed a small-scale farming industry producing tomatoes the whole year-round.
In the world, firewalking is practiced only on Beqa Island (by the Sawau clan), in some parts of Bulgaria and Greece (by Eastern Orthodox Christians during some religious feasts) and formerly by some Polynesian tribes (between 1893-1953).
