Berlin is a Spree River/Havel River cruise port, city-state, Germany's capital and Europe's second-largest city by population (around 4,5 million, metro over 6,1 million) - after London (England UK).
The town was founded around 1230 AD and later became part of Brandenberg (Prussia). In 1871 it became the German Empire's capital. The city's main tourist attractions include Brandenburg Gate, State Opera House, Museuminsel, St Hedwig's Cathedral, St Nicholas Church, Humboldt Universitat, Spandau Zitadelle (water-surrounded medieval fortress). The city is a great destination for vacation travel and shopping, featuring numerous cafes and shops on the boulevards Unter den Linden and Kurfurstendamm.
Berlin city-state generated GDP in 2015 over EUR 124 billion (USD 142 billion). The city's economy is based on services (around 84%), with total labour force around 1,9 million (nearly a/3 of the metro population). Other major industries are life sciences, research, biotechnology, financial services, transportation, IT and comm tech, media, advertising, music, design, construction, e-commerce, tourism and shopping (retails, hotels, bars, restaurants).
Research labs in the city have some of the world's largest corporations, including VW and Pfizer. Science and Business Park (Adlershof, within Eurozone) is Germany's largest technology park. Citystate's largest employers include Deutsche Bahn, Charite (Europe's largest university clinic), Federal Government of Germany, BVG (Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe / Berlin Transport Company), Siemens (Europe's largest industrial manufacturing company), Deutsche Telekom AG, Investitionsbank Berlin, Landesbank Berlin, Daimler-Benz (now part of Chrysler Corporation), BMW (motorcycles plant). Bayer Health Care (multinational pharmaceutical), Berlin Chemie (German pharmaceutical), Deutsche Bahn (Germany's national railway operator), Bombardier Transportation (rail vehicle and equipment manufacturer), Gazprom Germania (a subsidiary of Russia's Gazprom), Coca-Cola, Pfizer Inc (US pharmaceutical), Total (French multinational oil and gas company).
