Block Island is part of the United States' state of Rhode Island. It was named after Adriaen Block, Dutch explorer. Block Island is situated in the Atlantic Ocean about 23 kilometres (14 miles) east of Montauk Point, Long Island, NY, and 21 kilometres (13 miles) south of the coast of Rhode Island, from which is separated by Block Island Sound.

The U.S. Census Bureau defines the island as Census Tract 415, Washington County, Rhode Island. In 2010, the island's population of 1,050 lived on a land area of 25.211 km2 (9.734 mi2). Block Island is part of Outer Lands region, coastal archipelago that was theoretically made by recessional and terminal moraine which, according to some theories, resulted from the retreat of Wisconsonian Laurentide glacier around 22,000 years ago.

Block Island was added by the Nature Conservancy to its list of "The Last Great Places" which consists of 12 sites in the Western Hemisphere. Around 40% of the isle is set aside for conservation. Block Island has been visited by Presidents Bill Clinton, Dwight D.Eisenhower, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Ulysses S.Grant. Other famous visitors include Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart, who each made separate trips in 1929.

The island is coextensive with New Shoreham city. Block Island is a popular tourist destination during summer months and is known for its hiking, bicycling, fishing, sailing, and beaches. The isle hosts a couple of historic lighthouses: Block Island Southeast Light, on its southeastern side, and Block Island North Light, on island's northern tip. Much of its northwestern tip is an undeveloped natural area, as well as a resting stop for birds along Atlantic Flyway.

Every summer Block Island hosts a week-long sailboat race named Block Island Race Week. On even years, the event is held by Block Island Race Week, and on odd years, by Storm Trysail Club. Yachts compete in a variety of classes, circumnavigating the island and sailing courses in Block Island Sound.

Other popular events held on Block Island include the annual 4th of July Parade, celebration, and fireworks. During these times, the population of the island can triple over the normal vacation crowd in the summer months.
