Bougival is served by the suburban rail line Transilien Paris-St Lazare, which is part of SNCF's Saint-Lazare train network.

As cruise port, Bougival was introduced by CroisiEurope in 2023 as part of the Raymonde barge's schedule.

The settlement was founded as a suburb of Paris in the 19th century. Bougival is famous for being the site of the Marly Machine (1684-built large hydraulic system in Yvelines) that in the 17th century supplied all the water for Versailles Palace's fountains. The complex apparatus consisted of 14 waterwheels on the Seine (approx 38 ft/11,5 m in diameter) which in turn powered 250+ pumps. The original Marly Machine was used until 1817, in 1858 it was replaced with another system and in 1963 was inaugurated an electrical generator for the pumps.

As a cruise shore excursion/bus tour from Bougival is visited Chateau de Malmaison, located just ~5 km (3 mi) to the east on road RN 13. The estate was built as a residence of Empress Josephine de Beauharnais/Josephine Bonaparte (1763-1814) who reigned as the first wife of Emperor Napoleon I/Napoleone Buonaparte (1769-1821) in the period 1804-10. The castle served as the headquarters of French government in the period 1800-02 and was Napoleon's last French residence where he lived until 1815 when was exiled to Saint Helena Island.
