Bremen is a Weser River cruise port, Hanseatic City (Freie Hansestadt) and the capital of Germany's Bremen state. By urban population (around 570,000) the city is ranked Northern Germany's 2nd largest (after Hamburg) and Germany's 11th largest. A large industrial and commercial city with a large river port, Bremen is also part of the Bremen-Oldenburg metro region with a combined population of over 2,5 million. Weser River (formed by Fulda and Werra rivers) flows through Lower Saxony to Bremen, then flows for approx 50 km (30 mi) to Bremerhaven where after some 10 km empties into North Sea (Baltic Sea).

Bremen is located approx 50 km (31 mi) east of Oldenburg, approx 110 km (70 mi) southwest of Hamburg (Germany's largest seaport), approx 120 km (75 mi) northwest of Hannover (Lower Saxony state's capital), approx 100 km (60 mi) north of Minden and approx 105 km (65 mi) northeast of Osnabruck. River cruise ships dock in Hemelingen (Bremen City District East).

The settlement was founded in the 7th-century, became a fortified (stone-walled) town by mid-1th-century, and developed as major shipping trade city in the following centuries mainly trading with Norway, England and Holland. By mid-14th-century, its population increased to over 20,000. City's economy in the 19th-century was marked by the companies Johann Lange Shipyard (building Germany's first steamships), Bremerhaven (Port of Bremen / established 1827), Norddeutscher Lloyd (1857-founded commercial shipping company), Beck's Brewery (1837-founded), Bremen Cotton Exchange (1872-founded). The 1971-founded University of Bremen is one of Germany's 11 elite universities with around 24,000 students. At the end of WW2 (1939-1945), US-British bombers destroyed over 60% of the city's built-up area.

As cruise port, Bremen is included in the regular schedules of some of Europe's largest river cruise companies - CroisiEurope and Nicko Cruises. In 2019, the port was visited by the ships Mona Lisa and Victor Hugo (CroisiEurope) and Frederic Chopin (Nicko). Next tables show the itineraries as ports sequences.
