Bruny Island is located off Tasmania's southeastern coast and separated from mainland Tasmania by Entrecasteaux Channel. The island has total area 362 km2 (140 mi2), length approx 100 km (62 mi), highest elevation point (Mt Mangana) 571 m (1873 ft), and a total population of under 1000.
The island consists of two lands (North and South Bruny) joined via a long, narrow isthmus. Dennes Point is a holiday village in North Bruny. South Bruny's main towns are Alonnah, Lunawanna, and Adventure Bay.
The island is named after Bruni d'Entrecasteaux (1737-1793) - a French explorer, who discovered it in 1792. In the 19-century's first half, during winter here was conducted off coast whaling. Since the early-20th century, Bruny Island is a holiday vacation destination, popular for its surfing, stunning coastline with fine sand beaches, nature parks (South Bruny National Park), historic sites, locally produced food and wines, cozy restaurants and cafes, various style accommodation options (camping, caravaning, self-contained cottages).
The isle is classified as an Important Bird Area that supports the world's largest population of forty-spotted pardalotes (Australia's rarest bird), around 1/3 of all swift parrots in the world, 13 of Tasmania's all 14 endemic bird species, around 1/4 million pairs of Tasmanian muttonbirds.
