Burg bei Magdeburg is an Elbe River cruise port and town in Germany's Saxony-Anhalt state (Jerichower Land district) with population around 24,000. The riverport is on the Elbe-Havel Kanal (northeastern Germany), located approx 25 km (16 mi) northeast of Magdeburg (state's capital city) and approx 100 km (60 mi) northeast from Berlin (Germany's capital). Elbe River forms the town's northwestern boundary.
The settlement was founded in early-10th-century around a castle. In mid-19th-century was built the 142-km long railway linking Burg with Magdeburg (Bahnstrecke Berlin-Magdeburg), with which started region's industrialization. In early-20th-century (statistical data for 1917), in the 1899-built slaughterhouse were slaughtered daily around 1,500 cattle, 1,200 calves, 10,000 pigs, 700 sheep and 150 horses.
Today, Burg is best-known for its well-preserved medieval buildings (towers and churches) and Europe's largest footwear manufacturer - Schuhfabrik Tack und Cie (founded 1883) - producing nearly 4,000 pairs of shoes daily. City's main landmarks are the fortified towers Freiheitsturm (16th-century), Hexenturm (11th-century) and Berlinerturm (14th-century), Wasserturm am Weinberg (1902-built water tower), Bahnhof Burg (1846-opened railway station), Stadtbibliothek Brigitte Reimann Burg (city library), Hainstrase 11-12 (mid-15th-century tannery), Burg Theater (Germany's oldest cinema still in operation), Town Hall (13th-century), Pieschelsche Anstalt (former orphanage / now senior center).
