Cebu City is located on Cebu Island (Philippines). The same-named province is in Central Visayas (Region 7) and consists of the main island (Cebu) plus a total of 167 surrounding isles and islets. Cebu Island covers a total area of approx 4944 km2 (1909 ml2). Cebu City has population around 920,000 (metro over 2,9 million).

Island's capital (Cebu City) is Philippines' oldest settlement and first capital (country's current capital is Manila / on Luzon Island). Cebu forms a large metro area together with 4 neighboring cities (Danao, Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue, Talisay) plus 8 other smaller towns. Mactan-Cebu Airport (on Mactan Island) is Philippines' 2nd busiest (in 2018 handled nearly 11,4 million passengers) following Manila's Ninoy Aquino Airport (over 45 million pax).

Cebu Island is among the most developed provinces in the Philippines. Cebu City is province's main center of industry, commerce, trade, administration and education. After 2010, the city became a global hub for business processing services, heavy industries, furniture-making, shipping and tourism.

The long and narrow Cebu Island has length 196 km (122 ml / north to south) and width 32 km (20 ml / widest point). Island's terrain features narrow coastlines, rugged mountains, numerous beaches, suurrounding coral atolls. The highest elevation point (Mt Manunggal) is 1097 m (36000 ft).

Cebu City's architecture is marked by Spanish and Roman Catholic cultures plus numerous historically important sights spread all over the island. Most municipalities and cities in the province have their own cultural festivals.

Cebu City cruise terminal

Cruise ships to Cebu Island Philippines dock (anchor) at Cebu City - port city on the island's central-eastern coast.

In March 2019, Cebu Port Authority (CPA) announced its plans to convert the existing passenger ship berths (deepwater docks located behind Malacanang sa Sugbo / Bureau of Customs building) into a dedicated cruise ship terminal. The new terminal's location is in close proximity to popular tourist attractions like Magellan’s Cross, Fort San Pedro, Basilica Minore del Sto. Santo Nino de Cebu, The Metropolitan Cathedral.

In 2019, The Philippines government allocated over Philippine peso 300 million (~USD 6 million) for building a new cruise terminal (at Pier 2) as the old building was still occupied by Malacanang (official residence of country's President in the Visayan Islands).
