Chateau-Thierry is a Marne River (Seine River) cruise port and town in France's Aisne department (Hauts-de-France region, Champagne province). Chateau-Thierry is approx 90 km (55 mi) to the east from Paris City. The town has land area approx 17 km2 (6 mi2) and population around 15,000.
Town name's origin is unknown. Local tradition assigns it to Theuderic IV (712-737, Merovingian King of Francia in the period 721-737). The King was imprisoned here by Charles Martel (688-741) who in the period 718-741 was the actual ruler of France.
The town was also the location of the First Battle of Marne (WW1, September 7-12, 1914) and the Second Battle of Marne (aka Battle of Reims, WW1, July 15-August 6, 1918). In the 19th-20th-centuries, here were fought two major battles: in 1814 the Battle of Chateau-Thierry (Napoleonic Wars / between Prussia and France) and in 1918 the Battle of Chateau-Thierry (WW1 / between Germany and the USA). Chateau-Thierry is a terminus train station of the regional railway line starting from Paris (Gare de l'Est). The town is one of the exits of A4 motorway linking Paris with eastern France. Local bus routes are operated by Transval.
As cruise port, Chateau Thierry is included in the regular schedule of one of Europe's largest river cruise companies - CroisiEurope.
