Chios Island is located in in Aegean Sea (Eastern Mediterranean) and ranked 5th largest in Greece, with land area approx 843 km2 (325 mi2) and population around 53,000. The island is approx 7 km (4 mi) off mainland Turkey (Anatolian coast), separated from Turkey by Cesme Strait.
The island forms a separate municipality within Chios regional unit (part of Greece's North Aegean region). Island's principal port is Chios Town. Chios Island is notable for the export of mastic gum and is nicknamed "The mastic island". The most popular tourist sites are the island's medieval villages and Nea Moni monastery (11th century, UNESCO site).
The island is accessible via domestic flights (Chios National Airport, tour boats and ferries. High-speed ships offer daily passenger shipping services from mainland Greece (Piraeus-Athens, Kavala). Fast ferries connect Chios with the islands Mykonos, Paros, Syros, Naxos, Ikaria (Evdilos, Agios Kirikos), Samos (Karlovassi), Lesbos (Mytilene), Limnos, Patmos, Psara, Sifnos (Vathi), Fournoi, Oinousses.
Most inter-island ferry services are provided by Hellenic Seaways. Some crossings are operated by the Greek company Blue Star Ferries and the Turkish companies Erturk Lines and Turyol (both linking Chios with Cesme Turkey). After the island is named the cruise ship Blue Star Chios.
Chios Airport is located south of Chios Town and links the island with mainland Greece (Athens, Thessaloniki), also with the islands Lesbos and Samos, and seasonally - with Slovenia (Ljubljana) and Poland (Katowice).
