Concarneau is a port town located in Finistere (Brittany, northwestern France). The town covers a total area of approx 41 km2 (16 ml2) and has population around 21,000. Concarneau is one of France's largest fishing ports.
- The town has 2 distinct areas: modern (on the mainland) and medieval (Ville Close), which is a walled town located on a long island in the central part of the harbour. Historically, the old town was a shipbuilding centre. Ville Close is currently devoted to tourism with plenty of shops and restaurants aimed at tourists. The fishing museum is also in Ville Close. Ville Close is linked with the town via a drawbridge, as well as with a ferry to Lanriec on the harbour's other side.
- In August Concarneau holds the annual Festival of the blue nets. The festival is named after the blue nets of town's fishing fleet. It is among the oldest and largest, though such festivals occur throughout Brittany. It attracts over 1,000 participants all dressed in traditional clothing.
- Fishing, particularly for tuna, is the primary economic activity here. Les Mouettes d'Arvor is among the last traditional canning factories. Other major industries are the summer tourism and also small boat building. Ville Close separates the yacht basin from the working port.
