Corigliano Calabro is a port town and commune located in the province of Cosenza, 42 km (26 ml) northeast of Cosenza city, Calabria, southern Italy. The town covers a total area of approx 196 km2 (76 ml2) and has a population of around 40,500 people (2010 census).
- Corigliano Calabro is situated close to the mouth of the river of the same name. It contains an aqueduct, and on the eminence overlooking the town there is a feudal castle featuring massive towers and deep trench. The commune homes the ruins of the ancient Thurii city. Nearby is also the site of the ancient Sybaris city.
- In 1879, Corigliano Calabro had a population of around 13,000. It had 5 churches, 6 convents, and several public buildings. Licorice was produced on a large scale. There was also a considerable trade in oranges, lemons, olives, timber and wine.
- Corigliano Calabro is the birthplace of Francesco Serra, father of Brazilian politician Jose Serra (born 1942); footballer Gennaro Gattuso (born 1978); Italian constitutionalist Costantino Mortati; journalist, writer, playwright Vincenzo Tieri and the son and actor Aroldo Tieri (1917-2006).
