Dalian (Lu Ta) is currently China's largest ferry (Ro-Ro) and cruise port serving over 5 million passengers annually. The port is located on West Korea Bay and on Liaodong Peninsula. Dalian is the main ice free commercial seaport in northeastern China. The port's exceptional location, along with its quays and buildings (including a dedicated cruise ship terminal) rank it among the most popular in China.

This major port city was once a small fishing town that was transformed into a modern passenger and cargo port and a large, western-design city under Russian control (1898-1905). After the Russia-Japan War (1904-1905), the Japanese modernized the city to became a main port for the controlled by Japan Manchuria region. Following the WW2 (1949-1945) and the Japan's defeat, in 1945 Dalian was placed under Soviet-Chinese control. In 1955 it was returned to China, to become centre of heavy industry production.

Today, the city of Dalian is a maritime shipping, logistics and financial centre for Northeast Asia. The city features a significant history of being used for its ports by foreign powers. Previously, it was known as both Dalniy and Dairen. However, it was better known as Port Arthur and Ryojun, from the original Port Arthur (currently in Lüshunkou). The city covers a total area of 13,2 km2 (5 ml2) and has population of around 7 million.

In 2016, Dalian was ranked world's 31st with the other cities of China on the list being Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Qingdao. In 2012, it was ranked 82nd, and In 2006 was named China's "most livable city" by China Daily.

Dalian is a popular tourist destination among foreign visitors and domestic tourists, especially from Russia, Japan and South Korea, attracted by its multiple beaches and mild climate. Some of the most popular beaches include JÄ«nshítan Golden Coast beach, Fujiāzhuāng beach, Bangchuídao beach, XÄ«nghai Park beach, XÄ«nghai Bay beach, and Xiajiahezi beach. In 2007, Dalian was one of the 3 cities that were named "China's best tourist city", together with Chengdu and Hangzhou, recognized by United Nations World Tourism Organization and National Tourism Administration.

Regularly scheduled ferries serve the domestic passenger shipping to Shanghai, Weihai (Shandong), Yantai (Shandong), Penglai (Shandong), Tianjin and to the islands of Changhai (Yellow Sea, also in the Liaoning province). The port also operates daily scheduled international passenger shipping to Incheon (South Korea).

The cruise port is a long walk from the city, so taxis are receomendable. The port Authority provides free of charge shuttle buses going to Zhongshan Square. Metro Line 2 has a stop near the cruise ship pier, connecting it with Zhongshan Square and Qingniwan.

(New) Dalian Cruise Terminal

In 2009, Dalian Port started planning of a new cruise ship terminal, part of a larger waterfront complex.

The new infrastructure features leisure parks, a sea museum, ultra-modern Design Centre, a separate business district, also luxury hotels and private residences. Of all 4 quays, 2 are dedicated for cruise ships, while the other 2 quays are for the hotels and residences. The new terminal is linked with the sea museum by walkways. There is also an overwater stage for live shows.

To preserve the city's historical heritage, all existing buildigns will be renovated, as well as the old rails, paved streets and all mooring posts. The lighthouse will also be preserved and renovated.

The total land area is 110 ha (1,1 km2 / 0,42 ml2), plus architectural area of nearly 2 km2 (0,8 ml2).
