Den Helder is a port city and municipality in the Netherlands' North Holland province, with population around 60,000. The port (locode NLDHR) is located on North Holland peninsula's northernmost tip. Den Helder is also Dutch Navy's main homeport (military port). Ferries of Royal TESO NV provide regularly scheduled daily crossings between Den Helder and Texel Island (Waddenzee's West Frisian Islands).
During the 17th century (Dutch Golden Age for shipping trade, sciences and warfare) most of the Dutch ships assembled in the harbour near the town before sailing away to global trade and war destinations. Den Helder became a Dutch naval base in the 18th century and after WW2 (1939-45) - in 1947 - it officially became the Royal Dutch Navy's homeport. The city also houses the country's Naval College and Navy Museum.
