Dili is East Timor's (Timor-Leste's) capital and largest city, as well as the country's main seaport. Dili is located on Timor Island's northern coast.

East Timor (until 1975 known as Portuguese Timor) is a sovereign state in Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of Timor Island, plus the islands Atauro and Jaco. The country was colonised by Portugal in the 16th century.

On November 28, 1975, East Timor was declared an independent state, and just 9 days later its territory was invaded and occupied by Indonesia (as the East Timor Province/Indonesia's 27th) until 1999, when the UN issuaed a self-determination act. Officially, East Timor became a sovereign state on May 20, 2002, joining the UN and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Macau, Portugal, Sao Tome). Timor-Leste is also one of only two Southeast Asian nations with a predominantly Christian population - together with The Philippines.
