Donji Milanovac is a Danube River cruise port located in eastern Serbia. The town lies on Lake Derdap's right bank, and has population of around 2,500. Its name is translated as "Lower Milanovac" (as there is a town called Upper Milanovac).
The town lies on remains of 8000-year-old Mesolithic settlement of Lepenski Vir (archeological site) and of the Roman Taliata town. Donji Milanovac was relocated twice from its founding in the 19th century when it was settled on its original site on an isle on Danube.
In 1830, because of the frequent flooding, Prince Milos ordered Donji Milanovac to be moved to the nearest, right river bank. It became the first Serbian town built by architectural planning. Following the construction of the hydroelectric power station "Derdap I" in 1970, the town was moved back to its present location.
During the period between 1929-1941, Donji Milanovac was part of Morava Banovina of Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
Saint Nicholas Church (in downtown) was constructed in 1840 due to captain Misa Anastasijevic. Captain Misa's konak and Tenka's house were proclaimed Serbia's cultural heritage. There is a monument to 1912-1918 wars (Balkan Wars, World War I), as well as a mammoth sculpture.
