Dusseldorf is a Rhine River cruise port and the capital city of Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia state. By population (around 0,6 million, metro over 11,3 million) the city is ranked Germany's 7th-largest. Dusseldorf is an international financial and business center, famous for its trade and fashion fairs. Here are headquartered two DAX and one "Fortune Global 500" companies. Messe Dusseldorf organizes ~20% of the world's premier trade shows. In February-March each year, Dusseldorf holds the Rhenish Carnival celebrations on Rhine.

Dusseldorf has become one of Germany's top telecommunications centers. With 2 of the 4 big German providers of mobile frequencies, E-Plus and D2 Vodafone, the city leads the mobile phone market in Germany. There are many foreign communication and information technology companies in Dusseldorf, including Huawei, Ericsson, Nokia, GTS and NTT. There are also 18 internet service providers situated in the capital of North-Rhine Westphalia. Two airlines have their headquarters in the city: LTU International and Eurowings.

The city of Dusseldorf is famous for the Altbier (draft beer), having a total of 5 pub-breweries, 4 of which are located in the Old Town (Altstadt). Seasonal "Christmas beer" botled variations are available for purchasing starting mid-November. Every Christmas, in downtown is hosted one of the biggest German Christmas markets. The Christmas festival occurs from November 17 until December 23, each year. The Christmas fest brings the city a large portion of tourism as many people from nearby regions come to drink hot chocolate and mulled wine and watch craftsman create art. The event contains small wooden buildings clustered in the middle of Dusseldorf for all citizens to enjoy. The event has an old European feel and is very lively.

River cruise ships in Dusseldorf dock at Rheinuferpromenade ("Rhine promenade"). This waterfront street connects the old town with the modern harbor. The promenade is lined with numerous cafes and bars.

The promenade has length of 1928 m / 6330 ft and is the city's most important north-south connection, stretching from Oberkasseler bridge along the old town front to Landtag. It has walking and cycling lanes, over 600 trees and lots of riverfront space for strolling. From Freitreppe (at the Burgplatz) you can enjoy the view of passing ships.
