Volendam is a river cruise port and town in Edam-Volendam municipality (Netherlands's North Holland province), with population around 22,000. There is a regular connection (via ferries) between Volendam and Marken (Waterland municipality).
Originally, this was the location of Edam's harbor. In the 14th century, Edam's inhabitants dug a canal to Zuiderzee (shallow bay of North Sea) thus removing the need for the original harbor. After damming and land reclamation, fishermen and farmers settled the new location, forming the new Vollendam (translated "filled dam") community.
Volendam is among Holland's signature tourism travel destinations, famous for its old fishing boats and traditional clothing still worn by many residents. Women's costume (featuring a high, pointed bonnet) is among the most recognizable traditional Dutch costumes, often featured on postcards. The town has a small clothing-themed museum where tourists can also have photos taken in traditional costumes.
