Enderby Island NZ (New Zealand) is one of the Auckland Islands and located in close proximity (2 mi / 3 km) to Auckland Island's northeastern coast (Port Ross / natural harbour). Enderby is the largest in the Auckland archipelago (subantarctic island group). In the strait between Auckland and Enderby are located several smaller isles, including Rose and Ewing.
Enderby Island NZ is not to be confused with Enderby Island WA (in Western Australia's Dampier Archipelago). The island's scenery is marked by a rocky coastline with high cliffs and bog and wetland interior with with numerous streams, Teal Lake (southeastern part). Cruise ships anchor at Sandy Bay (southwestern coast) which is Enderby's only landing point. The area is best known for the New Zealand sea lions (Phocarctos) breeding colony.
Enderby Island is a designated Important Bird Area as a breeding site for several seabird species, among which are the endemic Auckland shag (cormorant), Auckland teal (dabbling duck), Auckland rail (flightless bird) and Auckland snipe (sandpiper/shorebird). Besides New Zealand sea lions, on the island live brown skuas (Antarctic skua), New Zealand pipits (passerine birds), northern giant petrels (large predatory seabird), yellow-eyed penguins (aka hoiho / tarakaka).
