Erlangen is a Main River cruise port and city in Germany's Bavaria state (Urban district) with population around 110,000. The city lies north-west of Nuremberg, at the confluence of Regnitz River and its tributary Schwabach. It is connected with Main River via Bamberg.
Here are located the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, branch offices of Siemens AG, Max Planck Institute, the Fraunhofer Society (research Institute).
The University of Erlangen-Nuremberg has 5 faculties; with some departments in Nuremberg. It has almost 40,000 students, of which nearly half study in Erlangen. The universiti maintains its own botanical garden.
Bergkirchweih is an annual beer festival, similar to Oktoberfest held in Munich (though smaller in scale). This festival alone draws over 1 million visitors per year. The event takes place during the 12 days before and after Pentecost (t49 days after Easter). This period is called "5th season" by the locals. Beer is served in 1L (33 US ounces) stoneware jugs on wooden tables. The festival is held under the trees of "Berg", small and wooded hill with old beer cellars (caves) owned by local breweries. The caves extend for 21 km (14 mi) throughout the hill and maintain constant cool underground temperature.
