El Ferrol is a port city in Galicia (northwestern Spain), located on the Atlantic coast. The town has total area approx 82 km2 (32 mi2) and population around 80,000, ranking it Galicia's 5th largest. Together with Ortegal and Eume, Ferrol forms Ferrolterra (metro area) - ranked Galicia's 3rd largest (total population over 220,000).

Port Ferrol

Port Ferrol is a harbour waterway with anchorage area depth 12 m, cargo pier depth 6 m, oil terminal depth 12 m, dry-dock (large ship repair facility), railway access. For most of its history, Ferrol has been major naval shipbuilding (and generally) Spanish Navy port. Currently, Ferrol is best-known for Navantia's shipbuilding yards.

In late-May 2016, the board of directors of Port Authority of Ferrol-San Cibrao approved "Business Plan 2016-2020". The EUR 150 million budget was for port redevelopment works, including railway access (EUR 5 M), splitting of the sewerage and building a connection to port's general collector (EUR 2,6 M), redesign of Curuxeiras Dock, new building (port authority offices). The 5-year project was largely financed by Fondo Financiero de Accesibilidad (Financial Accessibility Fund / EUR 103 M). The remaining 47 million were provided from port authority-generated funds and the loan repayment (starting 2020).

On February 23-24, 2019, Port Ferrol conducted its ever-first LNG bunkering (ship refueling) operation when two newbuild passenger ferries were filled with LNG (liquefied natural gas) by the company Repsol LNG Holding SA. The ships (Samnoy, and Huftaroy / both owned by Torghatten Nord) received in total 178 m3 LNG. The bunkering operation was carried out at Mugardos Terminal's outer jetty. The facility is managed by Regasificadora del Noroeste (subsidiary of Reganosa).

As cruise port, Ferrol handles around 20 ship calls and ~25,000 cruise tourists per year. Among the visiting major cruise line companies are AIDA, P&O UK, Saga UK, Oceania, Windstar, Phoenix Reisen.

Ferrol cruise terminal

Port Ferrol's cruise terminal is located right in downtown. The cruise port has 2 dedicated berths - at pier 1 can dock larger ships, while pier 2 is for medium-sized vessels.

The harbor port is protected by a 200 m (660 ft) wide river estuary. Port's access includes navigation through a narrow canal, then the river estuary opens out into a harbour waterway.
