Flores Island (officially Ilha das Flores) is located in the western Azores (Portugal's autonomous region). The island covers a total area of 143 km2 (55 mi2) and has population of around 4,000. Its length is 17 km (10 mi / west-east), its width 12 km (8 mi / north-south) and the highest elevation point (Pico do Burrinho) is 886 m (2910 ft).
Santa Cruz das Flores is located on the eastern coast and has the island's largest population (around 2,000). Here are the island's only school, the airport, all the health and commerce centers. Most of the administrative and economic services are also here, including fishery, auto repairs, construction, commerce, hotels, restaurants. Major contributors to the local economy are the dairy industry (butter export to Lisbon) and cattle raising.
The port was extensively redesigned and modernized, resulting in an increased cargo shipping traffic with Corvo Island (Vila do Corvo), the rest of the Azores, and also to Ponta Delgada (Sao Miguel Island) - Azores' main Transatlantic cruise ship port.
Ponta Delgada is located on Flores's northern coast and has population under 500.
