Fortaleza is a major port city and capital of the Ceara state, in northeastern Brazil. Fortaleza Harbour is a man-made port located in the Mucuripe inlet. Its docking quay has length of 1054 m (3458 ft). The port belongs to the company Portos do Ceara. For 2014, it reported the record 5,2 million tons of cargo handled, which was also an increase of 4,6% over 2013.

Most of Fortaleza port's export cargo shipping is fruits - bananas, coconuts, mangoes, papaya, watermelons, melons, acid limes. Fruits are exported mostly to Europe. There is a weekly scheduled service by the French container shipping company CMA CGM.

Fortaleza is on the Atlantic coast and boasts over 34 km (21 ml) of beaches. The city covers a total area of 315 km2 (122 ml2) and has population around 2,6 million. The metro area is Brazil's 6th most populous (over 4 million). It also has country's 3rd largest urban network in population, following only Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Today one of the major towns in Brazil, with a colourful harbour area and history dating back to 1612, the city of Fortaleza has developed around Fortaleza Nossa Senhora de Assuncao - the ancient fortress of Our Lady of Assumption. There is much to enjoy in its old city centre, where visitors will see the magnificent iron structured Teatro Jose de Alencar and a variety of museums or they can bargain in the market for lace, embroidery or other local handicrafts. In recent times, Fortaleza has made attempts to expand its tourist trade and to encourage the building of luxury hotels along city's fine beaches.

The first Portuguese arrived in 1603. After clashes with the Indians, they were restricted to settling in the coastal area. Only with eventual blazing of cattle trails into interior was it possible to subdue hostile Indians. It was from Fortaleza that the move for independence from Portugal had its start and actual fighting took place between the Portuguese and local patriots. Prosperity came to the town in the 19th century when ranching was quickly expanding and Fortaleza became a prime port for hinterland.
