Germersheim is a Rhine River cruise port and town in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate state (Germersheim district) with population around 20,000. The neighboring cities and large towns are Karlsruhe, Speyer, Landau, Philippsburg, Worth.

Following the invasion of Gallia, Gaius Iulius Caesar made Rhine river the border between Germania and the Roman Empire. Some areas east of it were afterwards invaded and added to the Roman province Decumates. Because it was more and more attacked, in the second half of the 3rd century it was given up and a military camp was founded, called "Vicus Iulii" ("Village of Julius). It was supported up to the 4th century.

The first record of the "Germersheim" name is from 1090, when it was named in Sinsheimer Chronik. The German King Rudolph von Habsburg gave Germersheim city rights in on August 18, 1276. There is a legend saying that he, as a sick man, rode to Speyer to die there, not in Germersheim.
